The cinetrix apologizes for going AWOL today. The arrival of August caught her unawares.
As a token of our esteem, please accept this gorgeous still from Bernardo Bertolucci's stupendous film, The Conformist.
Still still still not on DVD, and only occasionally glimpsed on cable or at certain video stores in the dubbed travesty version, this film constitutes one of the creamiest sets of images ever to grace the screen. Never has fascism looked so goddamn stylish.
Il Conformista is currently showing at Film Forum until August 11. If you have any way of getting there, go. For the rest of us, a little snippet of dialogue:
Marcello: I'm going to build a life that's normal. I'm marrying a petty bourgeoise.
Confessor: Then she must be a fine girl.
Giulia: Speak out. Go ahead.
Marcello: Mediocre. A mound of petty ideas. Full of petty ambitions. She's all bed and kitchen.
Heh. "Bed and kitchen." Now that's a put-down.
