It's much worse than you think. Today's hotshot film "journalists" are young, dumb, and full of come. They work cheap and write even cheaper. Some rabblerousers remain in the recesses of alt-weeklies and a few honest blogs. But the majority of those who write about film are arrogant and entitled fools who know nothing of elementary film terminology, basic cultural know-how, and, in some cases, cinema made before 1981. Stupidity that is prized before intelligence, sycophantism that is rewarded before inquiry. In such a climate, cinematic journalism, as we once knew it, cannot survive. Write an honest word about a film or a film figure and you'll be blacklisted by a publicist quicker than the secretary who maintained the "enemies" ledger for Nixon.
Graham Fuller is, quite frankly, lucky to be writing anywhere given this atmosphere. So is anybody with a legitimate interest in inquiry.
