The other day the cinetrix received the following e-mail:
I have no idea who you are, but I often read your webpage and am grateful for your kind words. That said, I'm leaving the Harvard Film Archive! I'm leaving to attend Columbia University in the fall. This is a big scary step for me, but one that I am deeply looking forward to. There is only one catch. The money. I don't have $57,000. Actually, I don't know anyone who does. So, I've come up with a cunning plan!
I decided to ask the world (or at least the part of the world with internet access) to send me a dollar. I figure if I can get 40,000 people to participate I'll have enough to go to school (instead of having to defer).
Here is the website (yes, the title IS clever, isn't it): http://givebuckabuck.blogspot.com
And if you think this idea is even remotely interesting or merits greater visability, tell you neighbors. Tell you friends. Heck, tell the neighbor's monkey!
Julie Buck
Now, the cinetrix will be paying for her stint in Washington Square until she's old and gray, so she feels Julie's pain. Also, Buck and her predecessor, IFC Center's Katie Trainor, are among two of my favorite women on the front lines of film exhibition and preservation. So consider kicking in whatever a matinee costs in your town and support the arts.
