Now that documentaries are suddenly cool and popular, the cinetrix is having a difficult time selecting just two to expose to the kiddies this fall.
Currently, I have General Idi Amin Dada: A Self-Portrait on the syllabus because, really, who doesn't love affable, murderous African despots? I worry the French might be a bridge too far for our little isolationists, but the story is sure to grab their attention. However, all three visiting filmmakers this semester are documentarians, so we already have a couple of portraits and one war-torn nation piece to look forward to. Maybe I should go the opposite direction and show Unzipped or Death by Design?
Mighty Interweb denizens, this is where you come in: What are some of your recent favorites, what's slept on, what is a bona fide classic, and what would have blown your mind at age 19? Pipe up in the comments, please.
P.S.-The most harrowing doc I've seen all year, Lauren Greenfield's Thin, doesn't bow on HBO until sometime this fall, or I'd show that, hands down.
