In the fall the cinetrix will be taking on an English class for the first time in ages: twentieth and twenty-first century lit, a category just vague enough to have some fun. My thinking is to build a syllabus solely of literature--short stories, novels, memoirs, graphic novels, creative nonfiction, etc.--that's been adapted into films. We won't necessarily watch all of the adaptations, but I thought it might be a great way to tease out the differences between and challenges of each medium over fourteen weeks.
Pretty much anything published after the second World War up to yesterday is fair game, so I've been scribbling away possible titles as they come to me. But I hadn't thought to consider a book about Hollywood until I came across this list of five great novels of Hollywood by Liz Brown. Naturally, given Hollywood's solipsistic bent, most of these have made their way to the silver screen, too, but I'm sure that there are plenty more candidates in both categories that I'm not thinking of.
So, I invite you to come up with your top 5 for Monday morning, High Fidelity stizz, be it best recent adaptations or worst jump from page to screen or favorite Hollywood lit. Have at.
