From September 2012. Carlos says, "Out of the hospital and at the movies…." The cinetrix is fond of the following: "The movie contains a lot of violence, Appalachia style."
"Lawless" (+)
The setting of this superb film is Franklin County, Virginia, in the early 1930s during Prohibition.
The story is based on a novel by Matt Bondurant entitled "The Wettest County in the World," allegedly based on a true story. It involves corrupt law enforcement officers seeking to put three brothers and their neighbors who are bootleggers out of business.
The brothers include Forrest (Tom Hardy) who is tough, smart and in charge; Howard (Jason Clarke) who is always drunk and aggressive; and, Jack (Shia LaBeouf) the youngest brother and the most interesting. The fourth member of the booty band, who is somewhat mentally disabled, is Cricket (Dan DeHaan).
The strong and diverse personalities are well presented by each of the actors.
Charley Rakes (Guy Pearce) is a federal law enforcement officer from Chicago who is not only corrupt but sadistic as well.
The movie contains a lot of violence, Appalachia style. Every scene is gripping. The attention to detail in dress, cars, and lifestyles is meticulous, and the scenes of the countryside are wonderful to behold.
This is a very special picture not to be missed.
